Every year on 9 May, Europeans and friends of Europe celebrate Europe Day, the historic day in 1950 when French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman called for the unification of Europe in the wake of the devastation of World War II. The 9 May 1950 Schuman Declaration proposed a new supranational model for Europe, a visionary idea based on sharing responsibility for critical assets and solidarity among nations. This led to the European Union as we know it today – a force for peace, unity and cooperation within Europe and worldwide. Never has this legacy been more true than during these testing times as we continue to weather the pandemic and address global challenges together.
9 May Europe Day also represents an occasion for European communities around the world to celebrate their cultural roots. From Vancouver to Halifax, Canada is home to vibrant and diverse European communities and Canadians have close ties to Europe through friends and family. These strong people-to-people connections and shared values will remain at the heart of our enduring friendship.
