Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, pictured in July waving to his party's candidates in Ottawa during a pre-election training session, owes his ascent to the cult of celebrity that he's been able to cultivate thanks to his deep political roots. The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade

Mayor Jim Watson, pictured during a scrum with reporters after a heated council meeting discussing the status of the controversial proposed addition to the Chateau Laurier on July 10, 2019. Mr. Watson and Ottawa's city councillors have taken plenty of heat from the public over the proposal, which they approved. The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade

Heritage Ottawa announced recently that it has retained Michael Polowin of Gowling WLG and co-council Marc Denhez, to act on its behalf. Heritage Ottawa states that it 'is committed to preventing a design which denigrates rather than enhances the Château Laurier, and its unique symbolic place in the magnificent Canadian landscape,' and 'to prevent the desecration of the most iconic building in Ottawa, next to the Parliament Buildings.' Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer. Although Angus Reid still predicts a Conservative win in October (CPC 38 per cent, Liberals 30 per cent), the Liberals are also gaining. The Nanos poll, on the other hand, predicts a Liberal win in October (Liberals 36 per cent, CPC 30 per cent), writes Ken Grafton. The Hill Times photographs by Andrew Meade

Completed in 1912 by the Grand Trunk Railways in conjunction with Union Station, the Gothic Revival Châteauesque-style hotel has been an iconic symbol of the nation’s capital ever since. A pet project of prime minister Wilfrid Laurier, the hotel bears his name today. The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade
